Buy an İzmirim Kart, then board the İZBAN toward Tepeköy
Get your card at the station kiosk beneath the terminal. It costs 200 TL for the physical card, or is free via the İzmirim Kart app. İZBAN blocks at least 125 TL of balance when you tap in at the airport. Load that much before you go to the platform. The station has one platform for both directions, so check the departure board and take the train toward Tepeköy, not the one toward Alsancak/Basmane. This route never passes through central İzmir.

Change to the regional train at Tepeköy
Get off at Tepeköy. Follow signs to the TCDD regional platform for Selçuk or Denizli. The two timetables do not always match closely. You may wait up to about 40 minutes. Check the regional schedule before you travel.

Ride the regional train to Selçuk (about 2 hrs total)
The regional train heads south through farmland to Selçuk station, right in the town centre. Including the change at Tepeköy, plan on about 2 hours from the airport to the station.

Walk or take a taxi to your guesthouse or Ephesus
Most guesthouses are a short walk from Selçuk station. For the Ephesus site entrance, take a 5-minute taxi or a 30-minute walk. You can also ask your pension in advance — many will pick you up from the station.

Yes. The airport is on the İZBAN line, and a train toward Tepeköy takes you away from the city, where you change for the Selçuk regional train. At no point do you enter central İzmir — this is the key fact most English-language sources miss.
How bad is the Tepeköy connection?
It is the one real friction point. The İZBAN and regional timetables are not perfectly synced, so budget for a wait of up to ~40 minutes at Tepeköy. In the morning the connections are more frequent than late in the day.
Train vs. a private transfer — what’s the real trade-off?
For two first-time travelers, the two-train route costs about ₺540 (≈ €11) all in: ₺140 in fares (₺70 each) plus two 200 TL İzmirim Kart cards, since anti-passback means each person needs their own. It also takes ~2 hours with a change and a wait, and is tight with big suitcases. If you already have İzmirim Kart cards (or use the free Digital İzmirim Kart) from a previous visit, the real cost drops to just the ₺140 fare. A private transfer is about ₺2,600 (≈ €55) for the car and gets you door-to-door in ~50 minutes. Neither is "right" — it depends on your bags, budget and patience.
