Public transport to İzmir City Center
İZBAN commuter train. This is the cheapest way into the city, straight from the airport station.

Buy an İzmirim Kart at the station kiosk
Look for the blue İzmirim Kart machine at the airport İZBAN station. The physical card costs 200 TL. This is the same price for a standard card or a personalised card. It is a real cost, not a deposit. You do not get it back. To skip this fee, get the free Digital İzmirim Kart in the İzmirim Kart mobile app instead. If you top up online, wait a few minutes before you travel. The balance can take a few minutes to activate.

Load enough balance for İZBAN
İZBAN uses a blocked-balance system at the airport station. When you tap in, it blocks money for the longest possible journey from there. This happens even if you are only going a few stops. Keep at least 125 TL on the card before you tap in.

Head down to the İZBAN platform
From the terminal, follow the train icon. Take the escalators down. The station is directly beneath Arrivals. It has one platform for both directions. Check the departure board and get on the train heading toward Alsancak or Basmane, not the one toward Selçuk.

Tap in and ride toward the city for about 50 minutes
Tap your İzmirim Kart at the turnstile. Board the train. Ride toward the city centre. Get off at Alsancak for the seafront and nightlife. Get off at Basmane for the old town, budget hotels, and the Metro connection.

Tap out at your stop
Tap the same card on the platform as you leave. This is important: it refunds the unused blocked balance back onto your card. It also unlocks a 90-minute free transfer onto the Metro or an Eshot bus. Use this transfer if you still have a short trip to your hotel.
Eshot city bus (200) to İzmir City Center
Eshot city bus 200. This is the standard public bus into the centre, not built for suitcases but cheap and frequent.

Find the bus 200 stop outside Arrivals
Exit Arrivals and look for the Eshot bus stops along the terminal forecourt. Bus 200 is signed toward Konak. It runs roughly every 20 to 30 minutes between about 06:00 and 23:00.

Tap in with your İzmirim Kart
Each traveler needs their own İzmirim Kart. The card costs 200 TL at a kiosk, or is free through the Digital İzmirim Kart app. The fare on line 200 is 77 TL full price. Keep at least that much loaded before you board.

Board and tap your card at the reader by the driver
Get on through the front door and tap your card as you enter. There is no free transfer on this airport line, unlike İZBAN, so tap in covers this ride only.

Ride toward the city for about 65 minutes
The bus follows the motorway then city streets into the centre. It gets busy and there is limited luggage space, so a large suitcase is awkward standing in the aisle.

Get off at Konak
Konak is the main terminus and a central hub for onward transport, including ferries and the Metro. Watch the stop announcements as you approach so you do not miss it.
Havaş from İzmir Airport to İzmir City Center
Havaş shuttle. A private coach with a luggage hold, direct to the seafront, no card needed.

Find the Havaş stop outside Arrivals
Exit Arrivals and look for the dedicated Havaş bay, signed separately from the city bus stops. Coaches to İzmir run at regular intervals through the day, with the last departure around 23:59.

Put your bags in the hold and board
The driver or an attendant loads suitcases into the hold under the coach, so this is easier with luggage than the city bus. Take a seat once your bags are stowed.

Pay the driver onboard
The fare is 260 TL per person, paid directly to the driver by card or cash. This is a private coach, not part of the İzmirim Kart system, so your city transport card will not work here.

Ride direct to Alsancak, about 40 minutes
The coach runs direct on the motorway with no stops to change at, arriving at Alsancak near the seafront. It is a faster and more comfortable ride than the city bus.

Collect your bags at Alsancak
Get off at the Alsancak terminus and collect your luggage from the hold. You are close to the seafront and nightlife area, with taxis available for the last stretch to your hotel.
Taxi from İzmir Airport to İzmir City Center

It's nearly midnight — has the last İZBAN gone?
The last trains toward the city run until around midnight, but a delayed late flight plus getting to the platform can just miss them. After that your realistic options are the official-rank taxi (higher night tariff) — budget roughly ₺840 to Alsancak late at night — or a pre-booked transfer.
İzmirim Kart or a single ticket?
Get the İzmirim Kart. The single-use Bilet35 costs more per ride and does not give you the 90-minute free transfer, which you almost always need to reach your final stop.
How much does the İzmirim Kart actually cost, all in?
The physical card itself is 200 TL, for either the standard or personalised version — that's the real card price, not a refundable deposit. On top of that, İZBAN blocks at least 125 TL of balance when you tap in at the airport (see the next question), so a new physical card plus İZBAN into the city comes to roughly 200 + 125 = around 325 TL as a practical starting minimum for one traveler. Remember it's per person, too — anti-passback means each traveler in your group needs their own card, so the İZBAN prices shown elsewhere on this site already multiply the 200 TL card fee by party size. If you use the free Digital İzmirim Kart in the app instead, you skip the 200 TL card cost and only need the ~125 TL balance for İZBAN, for every traveler in the group.
Why does İZBAN need so much balance just to tap in?
İZBAN at the airport station uses a blocked-balance system called Artı Para: tapping in reserves the fare for the longest possible journey from that station, not just the fare to your actual stop. For a full-fare passenger that's about 122 TL, so keep at least 125 TL loaded even if you're only riding a few stops into the city. Tap out at your destination and the unused balance is returned to your card. This is separate from the normal 35 TL city-transport fare and the 77 TL fare on the airport Eshot bus lines (200, 202, 204, 206) — İZBAN's blocked-balance rule only applies at the airport station.
Can I manage İZBAN with a big suitcase?
It works but it is tight in rush hour and there are stairs at some exits. Solo travelers with a backpack are fine; if you have two large cases a taxi or transfer is far easier.
