Public transport to İzmir City Center
İZBAN commuter train. This is the cheapest way into the city, straight from the airport station.

Buy a physical İzmirim Kart at the station kiosk
Look for the blue İzmirim Kart machine at the airport İZBAN station. The physical card costs 200 TL, the same for a standard bearer card or a personalised one. It is a real cost, not a deposit, and you do not get it back. Important: the free Digital İzmirim Kart in the app cannot be used on İZBAN — the operator excludes the suburban rail system from digital cards — so you do need the physical card for this journey. If you top up online, wait a few minutes before you travel, because the balance can take a moment to activate.

Load enough balance for İZBAN
İZBAN uses a blocked-balance system called Artı Para. When you tap in at the airport it blocks the fare for the longest journey on the line — currently ₺122.16, the fare all the way to Aliağa — even if you are only going a few stops. Keep at least 125 TL on the card before you tap in. You get the unused part back when you tap out.

Head down to the İZBAN platform
From the terminal, follow the train icon. Take the escalators down. The station is directly beneath Arrivals. It has one platform for both directions. Check the departure board and get on the train heading toward Alsancak or Basmane, not the one toward Selçuk.

Tap in and ride toward the city for about 28 minutes
Tap your İzmirim Kart at the turnstile. Board the train. Ride toward the city centre. Get off at Alsancak for the seafront and nightlife. Get off at Basmane for the old town, budget hotels, and the Metro connection.

Tap out at your stop
Tap the same card on the orange refund validator as you leave. This is the step that returns your unused blocked balance — skip it and the system assumes you rode to the end of the line and keeps the lot. Note that İZBAN does not carry the 90-minute free transfer that ordinary city journeys get, so a connecting Metro or bus ride is charged as a new fare.
Eshot night bus (202) to İzmir City Center
Eshot night bus 202. All four airport bus lines run only in the small hours, filling the gap after the last İZBAN. Cheap, frequent enough to be useful at 02:00, and not built for suitcases.

Find the right Eshot stop outside Arrivals
Exit Arrivals and look for the Eshot bus stops along the terminal forecourt. Four lines serve the airport, all of them overnight only, and they go to different places: 202 to Cumhuriyet Meydanı in the city centre at 01:00, 03:00 and 05:00; 200 to Mavişehir at 01:20, 03:20 and 05:20; 204 to Bornova Metro at 01:40, 03:40 and 05:40; 206 to Şirinyer at 01:30, 03:30 and 05:30. For Alsancak and the centre you want the 202. These are planned times that traffic or a breakdown can change, so check the Eshot timetable on the day.

Choose how to pay — you do not have to buy a card
You have three ways to pay and only one of them costs anything up front. The free Digital İzmirim Kart in the app works on Eshot buses — it is only İZBAN that excludes it — and the fare is 77 TL. A contactless bank card also works, at the 86 TL credit-card rate, with nothing to set up. A physical İzmirim Kart is 200 TL and only worth buying if you will make several journeys at the lower rate. Each traveler taps separately whichever way you pay.

Board and tap your card at the reader by the driver
Get on through the front door and tap your card as you enter. The airport bus tariff carries no 90-minute transfer, so this tap covers this ride only. Neither does İZBAN — the 90-minute transfer applies to ordinary city bus, metro, tram and ferry journeys.

Ride toward the city for about 55 minutes
The bus follows the motorway then city streets into the centre. It gets busy and there is limited luggage space, so a large suitcase is awkward standing in the aisle.

Get off at Cumhuriyet Meydanı
Cumhuriyet Meydanı sits on the Alsancak seafront, a short walk from the Konak waterfront, the ferry piers and the Metro. Watch the stop announcements as you approach so you do not miss it.
Havaş from İzmir Airport to İzmir City Center
Havaş shuttle. A private coach with a luggage hold, direct to the seafront, no travel card needed — but on the city route it runs only a few times a day.

Find the Havaş stop outside Arrivals
Exit Arrivals and look for the dedicated Havaş bay, signed separately from the city bus stops. Unlike the peninsula routes, the city coach runs only a few times a day — the published departures are 08:30, 10:00 and 11:30, plus 01:30 and 02:30 in the small hours. If none of those suit, İZBAN runs every ~13 minutes from beneath the terminal.

Put your bags in the hold and board
The driver or an attendant loads suitcases into the hold under the coach, so this is easier with luggage than the city bus. Take a seat once your bags are stowed.

Pay the driver onboard
The fare is 220 TL per person, paid directly to the driver by card or cash. This is a private coach, not part of the İzmirim Kart system, so your city transport card will not work here.

Ride direct to Alsancak, about 30 minutes
The coach runs direct on the motorway with no stops to change at, arriving at Alsancak near the seafront. It is a faster and more comfortable ride than the city bus.

Collect your bags at Alsancak
Get off at the Alsancak terminus and collect your luggage from the hold. You are close to the seafront and nightlife area, with taxis available for the last stretch to your hotel.
Taxi from İzmir Airport to İzmir City Center

Taxi (metered) and Private transfer are available at any hour, and İZBAN train (00:04, 00:29, 00:54) and Eshot night bus (202) (01:00, 03:00) and Havaş shuttle (01:30, 02:30) have departures in the small hours. It's nearly midnight — has the last İZBAN gone?
Probably not, and this is worth knowing before you pay for a taxi. On the published İZBAN timetable the last airport train toward Alsancak leaves about 23:50, and a few more run at roughly 00:04, 00:29 and 00:54. The Havaş coach also has 01:30 and 02:30 departures to Alsancak. Beyond that the airport bus 202 leaves at 01:00, 03:00 and 05:00, and after that it is the official-rank taxi — at the same metered tariff as the middle of the day, because İzmir applies one tariff around the clock — or a pre-booked transfer. Check the live İZBAN timetable, because these are the only trains where a few minutes of delay really matters.
İzmirim Kart or a Bilet35 ticket?
For İZBAN from the airport it is closer than it looks. A new physical card is 200 TL plus the 40 TL fare, so 240 TL for one journey. A 3-ride Bilet35 is 205 TL and an İZBAN entry uses 3 kontör of it, so a single airport-to-city trip works out slightly cheaper on Bilet35. The card wins as soon as you make more journeys, and only the card carries the 90-minute transfer on ordinary city bus, metro, tram and ferry rides. Bilet35 never carries a transfer right.
How much does the İzmirim Kart actually cost, all in?
The physical card is 200 TL, for either the bearer or the personalised version — the real card price, not a refundable deposit. On top of that İZBAN blocks 122.16 TL of balance when you tap in at the airport, so budget around 325 TL as the practical starting minimum for one traveler taking the train into the city. It is per person: anti-passback means each traveler needs their own card, so the İZBAN prices elsewhere on this site already multiply the 200 TL card fee by party size. The free Digital İzmirim Kart in the app does not change this for İZBAN, because the operator excludes the suburban rail system from digital cards. The app card is fine for Eshot buses, the metro, trams and ferries.
Why does İZBAN need so much balance just to tap in?
İZBAN uses a blocked-balance system called Artı Para: tapping in reserves the fare for the longest journey from that station, not the fare to your actual stop. From the airport that is 122.16 TL — the fare all the way to Aliağa — so keep at least 125 TL loaded even if you are only riding to Alsancak. Tap out on the orange refund validator at your stop and the difference comes back, leaving you the real 40 TL fare. You must tap out within three hours, and you must travel at least one station, or no refund is given. This is separate from the 35 TL ordinary city fare and the 77 TL airport-bus fare on lines 200, 202, 204 and 206.
Can I manage İZBAN with a big suitcase?
It works but it is tight in rush hour and there are stairs at some exits. Solo travelers with a backpack are fine; if you have two large cases a taxi or transfer is far easier.
